As the United National Party (UNP) said no one should complain about power cuts and  scarcity of essential goods if funds are allocated to hold the local government election, the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya questioned as to how one could intimidate the Election Commission.

"There should be a definite increase in electricity tariffs beginning in January in order to purchase the required coal shipments for the month." Kanchana Wijesekara, Minister of Power and Energy stated.
